8 oz. coin
I have a couple of half pound (8 oz.) silver coins covered in 24 kt. gold. They have liberty on one side and an eagle on the other. I also have the CA for them (US minted). Do they carry a nice (or any) premium?

When coins/medals etc. are dipped in gold, the amount of gold used is generally so tiny that it doesn't matter. When you say US minted, you mean they were minted by a private company in the US, right? I can pretty much promise you they weren't minted by the US mint. Got a pic? |

Here's some details from the CA: The Washington Mint Certificate of Authenticity Giant Half-Pound Golden Eagle ...Each Giant Half-Pound Golden Eagle has been individually die struck by The Washington Mint, and each contains one-half pound of .999 pure silver layered with genuine 24 karat gold. It also gives specifications repeating the .999 silver claim and giving the diameter and design (St. Gaudens' and American Eagle) However, the coins themselves DO NOT have .999 on them (which concerns me). They have "One Half Pound Fine Silver" |

If it's this one, it's a golden eagle. 5000 minted each year. Nothing special really. If you hit the right buyer on the flea, you might get a nice amount over spot. |

If you like it and you want it as a collectible, then cool. If you are interested in it as a store of silver, I would suggest you sell it to someone on ebay or whereever, and take the proceeds and buy some sort of recognizable silver like 90%, one ounce rounds or bars, or ASE's. I just say this because when silver goes through the roof people will want assurances that what they are paying for or trading for is what they are getting. A privately minted coin that does not say that it is 999 fine silver, and is dipped in gold to boot might not cut it. Just my opinion. |

Nice looking coins. I don't really like it when silver is encased in plastic though. Just something about it. If I was not selling silver, I would just keep ahold of them.
